Photon Therapeutics’ breakthrough UVC Vet treatment device has been recognised with the Technology Award at the Animal Health & Nutrition Technology Innovation European Summit 2026, with the Bermondsey Electronics team playing a vital role in bringing the product to life.
Photon Therapeutics is pioneering a new approach to treating infections in veterinary care through the use of targeted UVC light. Its flagship device is designed to eliminate infections quickly and reliably in a single course of treatment, offering a compelling alternative to traditional drug-based therapies, which can be inconsistent and contribute to antimicrobial resistance.
To turn this vision into a robust, market-ready product, Photon partnered with Bermondsey Electronics to develop the embedded software and system architecture underpinning the device.
From Concept to Clinical-Ready Technology
Bermondsey Electronics was responsible for bringing up the operating system and developing the core application running on the device. This included designing a system architecture capable of supporting both current commercial needs and future regulatory pathways.
A key focus was ensuring the device could evolve into a fully regulated medical product without incurring unnecessary cost or delay. To achieve this, Bermondsey implemented the following:
- Separation of user interface and safety-critical functionality
- Isolation of timing- and safety-critical code into a compact, analysable codebase
- Built-in traceability to support future medical device approval
This approach enables Photon Therapeutics to scale efficiently, keeping compliance pathways open whilst ensuring cost control is maintained during earlier stages of market entry.
Engineering for Safety, Reliability and Speed
Given the nature of UVC-based solutions to treat infections, safety and reliability were paramount.
Bermondsey Electronics developed timing-critical control systems with integrated checks and balances, alongside multiple watchdog mechanisms to ensure that any system fault results in a safe and observable outcome. The team also contributed to Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), ensuring that all potential risks were identified and mitigated beforehand.
In parallel, the user interface was developed in Qt5, a strategic choice that avoided ongoing licensing costs whilst delivering a responsive and adaptable UX aligned with client requirements.
Agile Development in a Fast-Moving Environment
As Photon Therapeutics navigated the challenges of a growing business, including shifting regulatory strategy and budget constraints, Bermondsey provided flexible, responsive support.
This included:
- Adapting development to align with a move toward the veterinary (unregulated) market
- Delivering rapid fixes and updates based on end-user feedback
- Supporting continued product shipment through fast turnaround solutions to hardware and battery issues
- Providing test reports and validation aligned with available budgets
Crucially, throughout the development process, Bermondsey Electronics maintained production code while preserving the ability to reintroduce deferred features as the product evolves.
